As members of the ALP hierachy “rally” around KRudd today one thing became evident. KRudd’s power base is not in the elected members of parliment but more within the union movement.
While a number of the parlimentary Labor party stated they stand behind him (as KRudd I would be scared about their positioning) it has been the union movement that has stood along side him. With the only alternative a severe leftist in Gillard many in the union movement and some of the largest unions are worried. KRudd as a neutral within the total faction system of the ALP is preferred by many. Even the left who see him as a voice of unity. Unfortunately he is a lame duck as of now as to avoid a spill he would have relequished most of his powers.
The real question everyone needs to ask is…..Who is running the ALP and hence the government. My guess that as of the long weekend it was without doubt the union movement. Within a week, their proxy Julia Gillard will take over with the backing of the left leaning unions and some of the right particularly in NSW, Vic and SA.
It’s back to the 60′s for all of us…………………..
